Education

I've just finish Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother by Amy Chua. Good book. Easy to read. Interesting memoir. Coincidently, I'm some how qualified as a tiger mother. Lol!!!
Guess I'll use a hybrid of Chinese and western style to educate my children. I want my kids to learn respect but I don't need them to take care of me when I'm old.
I'm currently so into Home Schooling!!! I'm practically searching information about it whenever I've got the time. Till my mum chided me for hogging my phone all day.
How it begins? This thought has been in my mind for so long. Initially I wanted to home school myself all the way. But I had second thoughts. I realize children needs to socialize. Thus, I keep google on enrichment class. So in the midst, I chance upon some blogs by mummies who does home schooling. So my journey starts. But I'm not giving up on classes cause I realize it's not easy to home school.
Enrichment Class
Due to budget constraint, I decide to choose one sat enrichment class for K only. Been to kindermusik and I'm not really keen.
So, more trial class coming up! I've bought My Little Genius trial lessons at $58 (2 lessons)!! They were having promo. UP is $130. Yet to decide on a date. Can only attend sat class as mum can help with Leo for awhile.
Going to Positive Focus on 28 May. With dec09 group of mummies and their tots! :)
Most impt, promo at $20 only!
Julia Gabriel and Seedlings Montessori in July.
I'm not really sure what Positive Focus does.
MLG is mainly like Shichida Method, does Right Brain Training, using flash cards and such.
Julia Gabriel, just like GUG(Growing Up Gifted), focus on learn through play. Lots of play, play and play. Pretend play, speech and drama (I like!), reading, etc.
Montessori is more of motor skills.
- pouring
- using scissors
- etc..
And lots of art and craft. More of touch and feel.
Home Schooling
I, will adapt a mix of all! The most fundamental in early childhood education, IMO, is reading. I start to read to K since he's few months old. Tho he sleeps in sarong, I'll rock him and read to him. But I was inconsistent. I stop after awhile. Especially after I got preg with Leo. I did flashcards (free gift from Woodwards Gripe water) with him when he's eight months old but again, I'm impatient and inconsistent. All he did was chew the cards after awhile. So I threw all away when we shift house.
Now, I'm back to flashcards. I'm going to DIY this time. I bought blank cards and print the pics myself.
I go to library to borrow those touch and feel story books for him. I make it a point to read with him everyday(trying). Hehe.
Bought several books online, especially from SMH. Read books and activity books. Yet to arrive. Anticipating.
DVDs. I'm not a tv person. I don't on tv for him in the day. But, I realize some educational DVDs per day won't harm(most disc are only 30 mins). I bought a Baby Genius Counting DVD and he Loves it! So, I went to order Leapfrog Learning DVD Vol 1&2 as most said Leapfrog is good. Joined amazon spree and waiting for it now. So much cheaper then buying here.
Went Daiso and Popular to buy craft scissors, non toxic crayons, markers, colour construction paper, etc. For craft time.
Big poster of alphabets, numbers, colours and shapes.
Cloth books with I bought when K is like few months old?
Anyway, I spree for Chinese books from China and it's really damn cheap!!! Irresistible!
Next, gonna get some puzzles and alphabet magnet. Also DIY puzzle too.. Hehe
It's time to crack some creative ideas! But my process is very slow as I don't have much spare time.
Being a SAHM gives me the chance to do these. I must make full use of it!
Lastly, do note that you can't solely rely on enrichment classes. Got to do work at home to see results. Thus, trial classes for us to try and for me to learn.
I might let K try all of their learning aspects(different approach of enrichment courses). Perhaps 1-2 terms of this then that.
So excited! Lol!!!
